Hyena: scavenger OR predator?

Hyenas have the worst reputations: cowardly, bad omens (in many African cultures), and scavengers, not even bothering to catch their own food. In reality, the spotted hyena, though it scavenges for food occasionally, is an active pack hunter of medium to large sized hooved animals, catching them by wearing them down in long chases. Spotted hyenas kill as many as 95% of the animals they eat. Only striped hyenas are largely scavengers. Hyenas are known to drive off larger predators, like lions, from their kills -- hardly cowardly behavior. So, give hyenas a break.
